How to Use Drupal to Create a Resource Database for All File Types

,
The flexibility of Drupal allows you to create virtually any piece of content. Using the custom content creator, you can create a resource database with downloadable files. You could use this as a file system to allow users to download documentation or media, or any other files. The custom content piece will become your database, and you'll be able to add new files by editing the piece at any time.

Instructions

    • 1
Sign in to your Drupal site and click "Structure." Click "Content Types," then click "Add Content Type."
    • 2
Name the content type and create a description. Consider naming it "Resource Database" or something similar, to identify it.
    • 3
Click "Manage Fields" next to the newly created content type.
    • 4
Move down to the "Add a New Field" section and name the field "File" or something similar. Select "File" in the Field column, then select the "File" widget. Click "Save." Click "Save Field Settings."
    • 5
Go to the "Allowed File Extensions" field. Input each file extension you want to allow. Because there is no setting to allow all file types, you'll need to enter each extension you may use manually. Separate them with spaces, not commas:
pdf txt doc rtf jpg bmp png
    • 6
Select the maximum file upload size in megabytes. For example, if you wanted to set the maximum upload size to 16 MB, use the following format:
      16 MB
    • 7
Move to "Field Settings." Select "Unlimited" as the number of allowing files. This allows you to create a virtually unlimited file database. Click "Save Settings."
    • 8
Click "Add Content," and select the content type you just created. Name your resource database and enter a description. Click "Browse" in the File Attachment section to attach your files. Click "Save." Repeat as necessary each time you want to add a file to the resource database.
