DLM files are extensions attached to download manager programs used to retrieve files from the internet. Adobe Download Manager, Microsoft Download Manager and Akamai Download Manager all use the DLM file system. All the download manager programs run on Windows and Mac operating systems. This type of program is connected to the Internet and not to the individual computer. DLM files are like a bookmark so these programs can keep track of Internet downloads.
Download Manager Programs
- Download manager programs that use DLM file extensions specialize in large file downloads that are too large to send over the internet in one piece. The Akamai Company focuses on the transfer of multi-gigabyte sized files. Download manager programs are used for standard downloads using secure SSL and user authentication. The desired files are on the company’s server and are pushed out to the user on request.
Function
- DLM files are assigned to incomplete file downloads. The extension help the computer user keep track of complete and incomplete downloads. When a file is interrupted in the middle of a download the computer searches for the DLM file to continue the download. If the DLM file is not detected then the download manager program stops the download process.
Process
- A download manager program does not live on an individual computer, but it exists on the company’s server. When the user requests the download file, the download manager program installs on the user computer. The program runs asking the computer and user about hard drive space and installation pathway. The program also looks for the fastest route through the internet from the server to the user’s system. The download manager program also remembers this route so future downloads are sent this way. Once the download is completed, the program uninstalls itself.
Replacement
- The DLM is only assigned to files on a temporary basis. Once the file is completely downloaded, the download manager replaces the DLM extension with the real extension. This reassignment of the file extensions is the reason internet download files do not run or open up if incomplete. For example, a Vista.exe file will be Vista.dlm while downloading until completed. If the download manager does not automatically change the file’s extension, the user can rename the program with the proper extension.
