What Is an IGS File?

,
Some computer-aided drawing programs -- commonly referred to as CAD -- use IGS files for the purpose of saving and exporting images. IGS files may be opened in several computer programs, as the file extension was designed to be a universal format for images designed using CAD.

  1. Format

    • IGS files are Initial Graphics Exchange Specification drawing files. Files with the IGS extension are saved in a text-based ASCII format. These files are used with both 2-D and 3-D vector graphics images, and according to File.org IGS has become a prevalent means of transferring 3-D images between computers using CAD.

    Uses

    • IGS files are used to save and export vector data, which is based on mathematical functions and creates clear images through the use of linear paths. The files can save and export solid object representations, wireframe models of structures and circuit diagrams. Objects in both 2-D and 3-D form may be saved and exported using an IGS file.

    Transfer of IGS Files

    • Because IGS has become a standard file extension for CAD drawings, the file can safely be sent to a user on another computer with the expectation that he can open it. Even if the other user is not using the exact same CAD application, he can open the IGS file with a variety of other software programs.

    Opening IGS Files

    • An IGS file can be opened on both Mac and PC computers, provided the user has a compatible program. Mac users have two options: IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe and Nemetschek VectorWorks. Windows users have a wider range of compatible programs available including Autodesk AutoCAD 2012 with IGES Import plug-in, Oracle AutoVue, Autodesk Inventor Fusion and IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe 18.
