As of the time of publication,
there are seven different computer applications that produce SPM files.
These files are incompatible; an SPM file produced by one application
cannot be used by another of the seven applications. Computer users with
more than one of these applications installed should keep the files
separate in different, clearly labelled directories to avoid the
possibility of confusion between file types. The SPM files are all
tagged with the SPM file extension.

WordPerfect
-
Probably the best known of the applications using the SPM file extension is Corel WordPerfect. Word processors like WordPerfect differ from plain text editors because they allow a range of text formatting options. These include effects like bold, underline and italic, along with different fonts and font sizes. These effects are stored by bracketing the altered text with instructions that change the appearance of the enclosed text. This codes are not usually visible. However, WordPerfect has a Code Reveal feature, which displays these tags. Code Reveal generates a file with the SPM file extension.
Package Managers
-
Red Hat Package Manager uses the SPM file extension as an abbreviation for “Source Package Manager.” Seven Package Manager also uses the same file extension. A package manager organizes the installation of software. Usually, the package contains archived files that need to be uncompressed, compiled and stored in different directories. The package manager coordinates all these tasks.
Super Password Manager
-
Often, a file extension is an abbreviation of the application that uses that file. Super Password Manager's use of the SPM file extension is an example of this. The SPM file for this application is a database file containing passwords.
StoneTracker
-
StoneTracker was an audio sequencing program released for the Amiga computer. The program was re-released in 2001 as a freeware and can be run on the Windows operating system through the Amiga Forever environment.
TeleFinder
-
TeleFinder is a bulletin board system. The server program can only run on Macs, but the client component also runs on Windows. The SPM file extension is used for a TeleFinder server parsed HTML file.
Nanoeducator
-
In nanotechnology, SPM stands for Scanning Probe Microscopy. The SPM file in Nanoeducator contains training material for SPM investigations. Nanoeducator also teaches methods for nanomanipulations and nanolithography.
