PDF, or Portable Document Format, files are designed to capture the visual information of a document and turn it into an image that is easy to email or print. The files do not need to be opened with the program that created the original document, making them accessible by more users. Problems in the creation of PDF files can cause lines, which may appear on-screen or on the printed product.
Viewer Test
- Before you adjust your PDF file, it is important to determine whether or not the problem lines originate in the PDF viewer or the file itself. Print the document on a high-quality setting to get the highest amount of detail. Adobe also recommends re-exporting the PDF file and using the "print as image" option in the Print dialog box. If you still see the lines, the problem is probably with the document. If the lines disappear, the issue lies with your viewer and will not affect the file itself.
Text Layer
- When you are working in a design program like Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign, differences in the rendering of text and images in the PDF creation process can cause lines to appear where they shouldn't. To make it easier for your software, place text on a separate layer and arrange the file so the text layer is on top. Place a blank layer directly below the text layer for extra insurance.
Hidden Images
- Many design programs allow you to hide objects in a file: pictures, text blocks and even blank layers. When the document is compressed into a PDF, the edges of the hidden object or the frame around it can show through as white lines. The best way to get rid of the lines is to delete the hidden objects in the file you export to PDF; save a new file if you don't want to lose the information. If you are using a program like Adobe Photoshop, you can also flatten the object to eliminate the lines.
Export Options
- The way you are exporting a file can cause lines to appear on the PDF. Adobe recommends that you export as a PDF 1.4 or later in the PDF Settings option. If you are using Adobe InDesign, turn off the Smooth Line Art option on export and convert spot color to process color in the Swatches Option menu. If you must use spot colors, separate them on different layers.
