Why Does OpenGL Cause a Lag in Photoshop?

,

OpenGL lags on Photoshop from time to time because it must compete with other programs for system memory. In addition to this, your OpenGL speed can suffer from an outdated driver and if you do not have enough RAM on your system. By learning about OpenGL in Photoshop, you will be able to check your system to determine which factor is limiting its speed.

  1. OpenGL

    • OpenGL, or the Open Graphics Library, is a collection of 250 functions that programs can use to render three-dimensional objects. OpenGL simplifies the process of creating these graphics by providing a unified interface and supporting multiple operating systems. Photoshop uses OpenGL by default if the computer that you are using it on contains a compatible Graphics Processing Unit, or GPU.

    How Photoshop Uses OpenGL

    • When you activate OpenGL by clicking "Edit," "Preferences," "Performance" and then selecting "OpenGL," it divides its processes between the CPU and GPU. The processes that maintain Photoshop's basic elements, such as its interface, continue to be processed by the CPU. However, any image editing processes go through the GPU. Under ideal conditions, this should result in lower CPU utilization and a more responsive Photoshop.

    Complications

    • Complications can occur if your display driver is out of date, if you are using the minimum amount of RAM, or if your version of Photoshop is out of date. To use OpenGL, your computer must have at least 256 MB of RAM. However, for optimal performance, you need at least 500 MB. To determine your current version of Photoshop, click "Help" and then "About." You can then download the newest version of Photoshop from Adobe's website.

    Update the Display Driver

    • Your display driver facilitates communication between Photoshop and your GPU. If your driver is out of date, OpenGL may function slowly. Typically, you will not receive an error message or any other kind of indication that your driver has fallen out of date. You can determine the name of the driver from within Photoshop by clicking "Help" and then "SystemInfo." You can find your driver beneath the "Video Renderer ID" heading. The company that produced your GPU will be included in the driver name. You can typically find an updated driver on their website, complete with installation instructions.

    Improving Performance

    • When OpenGL runs slowly, you should actively manage its settings to improve performance. You may need to change settings when you are using other programs with Photoshop, because each program uses system memory. To manage your OpenGL settings, click "Edit" and then click "Preferences." Point the mouse cursor to "Performance" and then click the "Advanced" button beneath "Enable OpenGL." If "Mode" is set to "Normal" or "Advanced," change it to "Basic." Basic mode uses the least amount of system memory. Next, toggle "Vertical Sync" and "Anti-Alias Guides And Paths" from on to off. These chances will make OpenGL run faster.
