How to Cut Off Elements Hanging Off the Workboard in Illustrator

,
When you're working on graphic designs in Adobe Illustrator, the designs you create exist on the artboard — or workboard — in the view. Elements added to this space may hang beyond the edge of it, but anything extending beyond the edge doesn't appear when you save or print the document. However, to ensure a clean appearance for your document so that you may better evaluate it as you work on it, cut off those parts of the design that extend beyond the workboard.

Instructions

    • 1
Launch Illustrator. Click “File” in the menu at the top, then click “Open.” Browse to and open the file you want to edit.
    • 2
Select the “Rectangular” tool from the toolbar and draw a shape that covers everything but the parts extending beyond the edges.
    • 3
Click on the “Selection” tool to select all of the elements in the document. Click “Object” in the menu, then click “Clipping Mask.” From the options, choose “Make.” Save your work.
