How to Make Artist Palette Invitations

Get creative when making your palette-shaped card.

Herald your coming party with an attention-grabbing invitation to pique the interest of your potential guests. If your party revolves around an artistic or creative theme, an artist's palette invitation makes for a bright and bold way to spread the news. It doesn’t require the skills of Picasso to make your own invitations, just a little ingenuity and some craft supplies. By making them yourself, you can save the bulk of your budget for the party.

• Cardboard
• Oval stencil
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Heavy card stock -- 8.5 by 11 inches
• Acrylic craft paints
• Paint marker or regular marker

     Make a cardboard template the size you want the invitation to be. The shape of an artist palette can vary. Make it oval for simplicity’s sake, or shape it like a kidney bean to give it more character. Use a stencil or draw it freehand. Sketch shapes on cardboard with a pencil until you draw a palette shape you like. Then cut it out.

     Put a 1-inch oval stencil on the cardboard palette for the artist’s thumb-hold hole. The thumb hole is usually near the lower-left corner of the palette. When you’re satisfied with the placement, trace the oval and cut it out.

     Fold a sheet of card stock in half. Make a sharp crease using your fingernail. This will be the fold of your card.

     Lay the cardboard palette template on the card stock, so the top edge of the template hangs off the folded edge of the card by about 1/2 inch. Trace the palette shape and thumb-hole oval on the card stock. Cut out the shape and the thumb hole.

     Dab paint splotches in different colors on the palette around the left and upper side. Make each paint splotch a different color. Let them dry.

     Use a paint marker to write on the center of the card cover, “You’re invited!” Let it dry.

     Open the invitation and write your message about the party inside.
