How to Make a Flap Book for Preschool
,
Preschoolers love lift-the-flap
books and will enjoy a book made especially for them even more than
those that are purchased from the store. Although it takes a little
work, it isn't that hard to make a personalized flap book for your
child. The hardest part will be deciding which items to include on the
pages. Make a fun book with pictures of your child, friends and family
hidden under flaps that appear to be windows and doors. Alternatively,
you can create an educational book with the names of different items,
colors, numbers or letters under the flaps.
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Lightweight poster board
Colored duct tape
Computer
Printer
Printer paper
Glue
Craft knife
Pictures to put under the flaps
1
Cut poster board to make the
size and number of pages you want to include in your book. Cut two
pieces of poster board for each page of the book since you need one page
to hold the flaps and one to hold the content for under the flaps.
2
Use your computer to design and
print the content for the pages. The front and back cover should not
contain any flaps. Print out pages containing what will be seen when you
turn to a page and pages that contain the content that will go under
the flaps.
3
Glue the papers with the flaps
onto poster board pages, with each page on a separate piece of poster
board. Use a craft knife to cut the flaps, making sure the opening of
the flaps is toward the outside of the book and not the center of the
book.
4
Put the pages in order with the
blank backs facing each other. Open the flaps to mark where they are on
the back of the facing page, then glue the content that goes under the
flaps in place. Make sure this content is slightly larger than the
opening of the flaps. Once the material is in place, glue the poster
board page backs together, making sure not to glue the flaps down.
5
Use colored duct tape to tape
facing pages together and bind the outside, and then leave the book
propped up with all the pages open to give it a chance to dry before
giving it to your preschooler.
