GIMP is the open source
graphics application of choice for designers who need comprehensive
editing tools, but don't want to shell out money for a commercial
application like Adobe Photoshop. With GIMP's simple graphical interface
it is easy to add color features, such as gradient shading to an
object.

Run the GIMP application and create a new image.

Click the "Text" button in the Toolbox, then select a font from the list.

Click a location on the screen to initiate text input, then type the desired text message.

Click the "Size" field in the Toolbox and type in a new value to increase or decrease the size of the text image.

Click the "Select by Color" button in the upper-right of the toolbox. Click the foreground color rectangle directly below the toolbox icons, then click your first gradient color. Click the background color rectangle and click your second gradient color.

Click the "Blend" tool located in the second column of the fifth row of icons in the toolbox.

Click the top of the text image and hold the mouse button. Drag to the bottom of the text image and release the mouse button. Doing so creates a vertical gradient effect. Alternately, click the left or right side of the text and drag to the opposite side of the text banner to create a horizontal gradient effect.
