How to Make a Mosaic Poster

Mosaic posters use a series of small photographs or images to recreate a single, large photograph, logo or image. Creating your own mosaic poster does not require any advanced photography software skills -- online mosaic creation websites will create mosaics for you. All you need to supply are the photographs and you can make a mosaic poster in a matter of minutes. You can readily make a mosaic poster to commemorate a special occasion or to give as a birthday gift.

     Choose an online mosaic maker to use. Mosaickr works with your Flickr images and allows you to order poster prints directly from several photo printing companies. Mosaickr also permits you to use your own images or images licensed through Creative Commons for the tile images. Use Picartia or Pixisnap if you want to upload a photo directly from your computer and print the poster yourself. Picartia uses stock photography to create the mosaic instead of your own images, while Pixisnap allows you to use images from your computer or Flickr photo sets as well as stock images.

     Select a master photo or image for your mosaic. This can be a portrait of a person or animal, a landscape, or an image of a logo or design.

     Upload your image to the mosaic website. If you're using Mosaickr, log in to Mosaickr with your Flickr account and select an image from your Flickr photostream. If using Picartia or Pixisnap, select an image from your computer and upload it.

     Choose "tile" images to create your mosaic. In Mosaickr, select individual images or photo sets from your Flickr photostream, or search for Creative Commons images with a specific tag. For example, search for images tagged with the word "dog" to create a mosaic picture of your own dog. In Picartia, select photos from their image collections. In Pixisnap, select more photos from your computer or choose from their image gallery or your Flickr account.

     Generate your mosaic. Mosaickr, Picartia and Pixisnap will all create a mosaic image from your selected photos. Pixisnap also allows you to choose your mosaic's level of contrast.

     Download an image of your mosaic. Mosaickr and Picartia both charge a modest fee for a higher-resolution image. Mosaickr, Picartia and Pixisnap all allow you to download a low-resolution image for free. Take the image to a print shop to have it printed as a poster, or order a poster directly through Mosaickr's print options.
