How to Make a Toddler's Touch & Feel Book

,
One way toddlers learn is through touching things. Children's brains are like sponges, so using every sense to educate a child is important. Using touch is easy when you make a touch and feel book for your child. Images of every day items or animals can be paired with similar textures so children learn what different items are. For example, using plastic wrap to demonstrate what a beach ball feels like. Instead of spending money on a touch and feel book, you can use items from around the house to make your own.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Card stock
  • Craft knife
  • Different textured papers and materials
  • Crafting glue
  • Hole punch
  • Book rings
    • 1
Cut a shape from the center of a page of card stock using a crafting knife. For example, draw a dog on the page and cut around the outside of the dog.
    • 2
Glue a sheet of textured material on the back of the card stock, over the hole. For example, cover the dog-shaped hole from the back with a furry piece of fabric. Other materials you can use for texture include plastic wrap, bubble wrap, card stock with holes punched in it or felt.
    • 3
Glue a second page of card stock on top of the back of the original page. This will secure the textured material in place. Allow each page to dry over night.
    • 4
Create a cover using a piece of card stock as well. Type or write words on the cover or glue a piece of tin foil so the toddler can see themselves on the cover.
    • 5
Punch holes with a hole punch along the side or top of the book every two inches.
    • 6
Connect all pages using plastic or metal book rings. These are found at school or office supply stores.
