How to Open a 3D Studio Max File on a Macintosh

3D Studio Max files, identified by the extension .3ds, are created by Autodesk and used to create three-dimensional scenes. If you do not have Autodesk on your Mac and need to open a 3ds file, you have several options. Google SketchUp and MeshLab are free programs that will open 3ds files, while Cheetah3D is a premium program with a free trial.


Instructions

  1. Using Google SketchUp 3D

    • 1
      Go to the Google Sketchup website and click "Download Google SketchUp."

      Select "Mac OS X," and then click "Agree and Download."

      Open the .dmg file when the download is complete, and then open the installer.mpkg file. Click on "Continue" twice, then enter your admin password to continue.

      Open the "Finder" and click on "Google SketchUp." Click on "File," and then select the 3D Studio Max file you want to open. Click "Open."

    Using MeshLab

      Visit the MeshLab website. Click on "MacOSX" beneath the "Download" header on the right sidebar. Open the MeshLab .dmg file when the download is complete.

      Click on "Meshlab," and then click "Open."

      Click on "File," and then click "Import Mesh." Select the 3ds file you want to open. Click "Open."

    Using Cheetah3D

      Visit the Cheetah3D website and click on the "Download" tab. The site automatically detects that you are visiting from a Mac. Click on the "Cheetah3D" .dmg file to download the program.

      Open the "Cheetah3D.dmg" file. Click on "Agree" to install the program.

      Click on the Cheetah 3D icon in the installation window and drag it into the "Applications" folder.

      Click on "File," and then click on "Open New Finder Window." Click on "Applications." Open the "Cheetah3D," and then click on "Cheetah3D." Click on "Open."

      Click on "File," and then select "Open." Select the 3D Studio Max file you want to open.
