Seven file types carry the description “RBF” and are identified by the RBF file extension. File extensions are not enforced by copyright. Software houses select file extensions based on abbreviations of file contents or the applications that use them. This results in the repetition of file extensions for unrelated file formats.
Backup Files
- Three types of backup files use the RBF file extension. These include the Windows Installer backup file, Retrospect backup file and an Oracle backup file. The Windows Installer RBF file records all actions, enabling changes caused by the Installer process to be undone. This reverts the computer to a state before the installation began. This file is stored in a binary format. Retrospect does not create backup files to establish a rollback position that unpicks work done by the program, because backing up work is the purpose of the package. Retrospect creates copies of files and folders.
Database Files
- Redatam is a census and survey analysis tool. It stands for “Retrieval of Data for Small Areas by Microcomputer.” The survey data is stored in a database as entities with attributes. Each entity represents a specific aspect of the total data, such as location details. The database is stored in a binary file. This file has the RBF file extension, which is an abbreviation of “Redatam Binary File.” R:BASE is another database system that stores its database in a binary file with the RBF file extension. In this case, RBF stands for “R:BASE Binary File.” Each usage has a proprietary format. R:BASE files cannot be opened by Redatam.
Quartus II
- Quartus II is a design package for the creation of programmable computer chips. The RBF file extension is applied to designs stored in binary format. In this instance, RBF is an abbreviation for “Raw Binary File.” Quartus II is a product of Altera Corporation and replaces the earlier MAX+PLUS II package. MAX+PLUS II also used the RBF file format and extension.
"Warhammer 40,000"
- THQ publishes a computer game series, developed by Relic Entertainment Inc, called "Warhammer 40,000." The series is a role-playing computer game for the Windows operating system. Within the "Warhammer 40,000" series, an episode called "Dawn of War 2" uses the RBF file extension. This file is stored in a binary format.
