VEM files are used for more
than one purpose. The most common usage is associated with a line of
flash drive devices sold by Sony. VEM files developed by Sony are
compressed files, which occupy less space than uncompressed files. When
the files are transferred back to a computer, however, they become
uncompressed.
Virtual Expander Compressed Files
-
Sony is the primary developer of VEM files. The corporation uses VEM files with the Virtual Expander utility, which is a program loaded on Sony Micro Vault flash drives. Flash drives are equipped with one end that plugs into a USB port, so that you can store files from a computer to the drive as a backup copy or for the purposes of transfer to another computer. The Virtual Expander utility is used to compress the files added to the drive, so that they will be smaller and take up minimal space on the drive.
Decompressing VEM Files
To decompress a file saved in VEM format to a Sony flash drive, just open the flash drive folder on your computer and drag the file to your flash drive or "Documents" folder. The act of dragging the file to another location automatically initiates the decompression process. You must have the Sony Micro Vault driver installed to your computer before the files will decompress; however, your computer will automatically search for and install the driver the first time you connect the flash drive to your USB port.Meta Media Video Email Files
-
The VEM file designation is also associated with Meta Media video files. The extension is only applied to videos that are created in Meta Media software, which is sometimes exported from a portable device. Digital recording devices that may use VEM files include video surveillance equipment, video conference equipment and webcams. The VEM file extension becomes applied to the file when it is sent via email as an attachment.
Playing VEM Files
-
As it relates to Meta Media software, the VEM is a proprietary video format, meaning that it is owned by one company only and designed for its own purposes. As a result, these video files can only be played on the Meta Media Video Player -- no other video players are compatible. Meta Media Video Player is available for Windows, but not Mac OS.
