Dictionary Files
- A DCT file may be a dictionary file for a particular program, such as a word processor or a translation program. This type of DCT file contains information about the spellings of words and may contain other data, such as translations, synonyms or definitions. Word processing programs and other programs where you type in information, such as Microsoft Word and the CAD productivity software AutoCAD, use DCT dictionary files to check your spelling and grammar.
Audio Files
- The file extension DCT is also used for some audio files. For example, NCH Express Scribe uses the DCT format for dictation audio files, or recordings of human speech. (The DCT extension, in this case, stands for "dictation.") This type of DCT file contains a header with information about the file and may be encrypted, which means you cannot access the file without the correct password. Another type of DCT audio file is a dictation file for StartSpanish, a language learning program.
Image Files
- A DCT file may be an image. The image retouching software DALiM LiTHO saves images in the DCT format. This type of DCT file is a continuous tone bitmap. Bitmaps, or raster images, are made up of pixels, which are tiny dots of color that combine to form the full image. The term "continuous tone" means that the boundaries between different colors are smoothed out to help you see a continuous image, rather than blotches of individual pixels.
Other File Types
- A few other programs use the DCT file extension. FoxPro, a database program, uses the extension DCT for database memos. These DCT files reference information in FoxPro database files, which have the DBC extension. Delphi uses the DCT extension for component templates. This may not be a complete list of all uses of the DCT file extension.
