
Mac OS X includes a disk encryption feature that allows you to password protect all or part of your computer's hard drive. If you have files that you don't want people to be able to find, you can encrypt a portion of your hard drive and place the files in that encrypted segment. The list of files stored on an encrypted disk can not be viewed without your password. The files also don't appear in search result if someone searches your hard .
Instructions
- 1Click "Applicatons/Utilities" in the Mac OS X Finder and click "Disk Utility" to run the Disk Utility application.
- 2Click "File" in the menu and click "New" > "Blank Disk Image."
- 3Click the menu next to "Where" and choose the location on your hard drive in which you want to create your encrypted folder.
- 4Type a name for your folder in the "Save As" text box.
- 5Click the "Size" drop down menu and click the maximum amount of disk space that you want to allow your encrypted folder to take up.
- 6Click "Create" to initiate creation of the new encrypted folder on your hard drive.
- 7Type a password for your encrypted folder in the field and click "Create" to create the folder. Your encrypted folder is hidden from search functions and you must enter your password to view any file that you put in the folder.
- 8Click and drag files from your hard drive to the new encrypted folder.
