What Is an ODP File?

,

ODP files are OpenDocument presentations. These presentations are created using OpenOffice software version two or later, and contain individual slides. Slides in an OpenDocument presentation may contain text, multi-media and links. The slides in the presentation are either advanced manually, or set to advance after a certain number of seconds.

  1. Development

    • The ODP file extension was originally created by Sun Microsystems. After its advent, the Open Office XML Technical Committee of the Organization continued to evolve the file extension until it reached its current, standard, format. The files serve as a part of the OpenDocument presentation software and are formatted with the OASIS XML-based OpenDocument standard.

    Contents

    • ODP files contain a variety of data, as they are responsible for storing an entire OpenDocument presentation. The files hold information that includes title slides, graphics, movies, text and all other data included on the presentation's slides. The files are also responsible for storing the transition effects between individual slides, as well as overall templates that apply to all slides within one presentation.

    Opening ODP Files

    • A number of programs allow users to open a ODP file, whether they are a Mac or PC user. Mac programs that are compatible with ODP files include OpenOffice.org and Apache Open Office. PCs running Windows may open ODP files with the aforementioned programs, as well as LibreOffice. According to Pareto Logic, Microsoft PowerPoint and KeyNote will also open an ODP file.

    Related File Extensions

    • OpenDocument offers other creation programs aside from OpenDocument Presentations. Spreadsheets use the file extension ODS, graphics are contained in an ODG file and the ODF file extension represents mathematical formulas. An ODP file can be placed in a ZIP file when a user needs to compress it. Compressed files occupy less space, and make transferring a file via email or flash drive easier.
