A PMD file is native to Adobe PageMaker 7, a desktop publishing package for Windows and Mac systems. You can also open the file format in Adobe PageMaker 6.5 and 6.0, as well as Adobe InDesign, which is another desktop publishing program for Windows and Mac systems. The PMD file format is also related to the dance animation program MikuMikuDance, a program for Windows systems.
PMD Files
- A PMD file is automatically generated when you save your layout, including newsletters, brochures and other layouts, in PageMaker. The file’s format is "name.pmd" with the “name” representing the file name you assign to the layout file. PageMaker 6.5 and 6.0 can also open PMD files for viewing, editing and printing. However, older versions of the desktop publishing package can't open them.
InDesign
- Adobe InDesign 1.0 through CS 5.5 can open PMD files and automatically convert the files to an InDesign layout. InDesign replaced PageMaker in 2004 and supported PMD files in InDesign 1.0 through CS. Once the PMD file is open and converted, you can save the file as an InDesign ".indd" file, if desired. You can also print the file or close it and not save it as an InDesign file.
PMD Sharing
- A PageMaker PMD file opens within both Windows and Mac versions of PageMaker and InDesign. However, you may encounter font issues if the layout contains fonts that aren't present on the Windows or Mac system. You can also export a PMD file as a PDF for sharing with others via the Internet or by email.
MikuMikuDance
- MikuMikuDance stores three-dimensional image files as PMD files. The files aren't related to Adobe PageMaker PMD files. MikuMikuDance PMD files are coded in Japanese and store different dancer models found within the program. You can edit MikuMikuDance PMD files using the program’s PMD Editor as well as Lightwave, Blender and Metesequoia. If editing a MikuMikuDance PMD using Lightwave, Blender or Metesequoia, you need to obtain a plug-in from MikuMikuDance to properly edit the Japanese-coded files.
Additional Programs
- The PMD file format is also related to RealTaxTools’ Payroll Mate 2008 tax processing package, the email application Pegasus Mail’s user dictionary files, and the spreadsheet application PlanMaker. The file format is also related to cellular telephone polyphonic ringtones.
