VPK is a file format specific to some games that run on the Source engine of game developer Valve. The VPK format was introduced with "Left 4 Dead," and has continued to be used in newer releases such as "Portal 2." People who create mods for Source games often need access to specific VPK files. In order to get inside a VPK file, you will need a program called GCFScape. GCFScape requires Microsoft .NET Framework to run.
Instructions
- 1Download and install GCFScape 1.7.1 or better. This free application can be found on software download sites such as AfterDawn and CNET's Download.com.
- 2Open your Source engine game's file directory. Find the "pak_01_dir.vpk" file. This file contains the base content for your game.
- 3Launch GCFScape. Open the "File" menu and select "Open." Navigate to the VPK file found in Step 2. You can now explore and edit the file's contents within GCFScape.
