If you double-click on a file with the LKU extension and it doesn't open then you probably don't have appropriate software installed to handle the file. Most LKU files were designed to work with transputers, a type of computer processor architecture that is not included in any modern computer systems.
Transputers
- A transputer is an obsolete microprocessor architecture that was designed to work in parallel with other connected transputers. Each transputer contained the components required to perform all computer system functions along with code that allowed for connections, or links, to other transputers. When multiple transputers were linked together then system processes could be distributed across the transputers in parallel. This feature was the first instance of parallel processing in computing and allowed transputer systems to perform multiple tasks at once on different portions of the system.
LKU Files
- Most files with the extension LKU are linkable unit files that were designed to be processed using the T9000 transputer system. An LKU file contains instructions for distributing coded processes over a 16-bit T9000 system. These codes were written using a relatively simplistic programming language that offered only 32 unique operating instructions. The simplicity of the instruction set was necessary for executing code on a T9000 because each transputer could operate all required code independently.
Opening on Modern Computers
- The T9000 and others transputers were originally conceived in the 1980s as a method for overcoming the space limitations posed by the surface area of a microchip. The transputer architecture was rendered obsolete after technological advances allowed for factorially smaller chip inscription. Since modern Windows, Mac and UNIX computers do not support transputer parallel processing schemes there are no applications that can open T9000 LKU files.
Other LKU Files
- Aside from T9000 linkable unit files there are no other common file types that use the LKU extension. However, a software developer can save data files with any extension, including LKU. Viruses are no exception to this rule, so it is possible that a file on your computer with the LKU extension may be a component in such malware. If you are suspicious of an LKU file on your computer then you should run a virus scan and determine whether the file is malicious. If the file is not malicious then you can try opening it using a text editor such as Windows Notepad; if the file includes any ASCII text then you may learn some information about the file's application of origination.
