What Is the File Extension NVRAM?

What Is the File Extension NVRAM?thumbnailFiles with the extension .nvram are virtual machine data files associated with VMware virtualization software. Virtualization allows a single computer to run multiple virtual machines, optimizing and sharing the resources of the main system. NVRAM files store information about the state of the virtual machine's BIOS, or basic input/output system. NVRAM files are part of a group of files that comprise the virtual machine's architecture.

  1. Associated Programs

    • NVRAM files are used by VMware vSphere, a program that enables virtualization of x86-based computers. Installing the software on a host machine allows that machine to be "split" into multiple virtual machines. Virtual machines can run their own operating systems and applications. In a company setting this means that each user only needs a monitor and input devices (mouse and keyboard), instead of an entire computer.

    User Interaction

    • NVRAM files do not need to be accessed by virtual machine users, and in most cases they are not even made available to access. The data in NVRAM files is solely handled by the vSphere software. Since NVRAM files are most commonly used in a company setting, only an IT professional should access the file.

    Safety

    • While there are no reports of NVRAM files containing malicious software they are not considered safe for the common user to interact with. Any problems with NVRAM files should be dealt with by a virtualization professional.

    File Location

    • NVRAM files can be found on the host computer in a virtual machine configuration. There is no reason an NVRAM file would be found anywhere else since they are very specific in their use.
