As you work with graphics and edit photos and drawings using computer software, you may sometimes want to create different effects. A gritty effect can make a photo, graphic or drawing appear unfocused and grainy. It can make a photo or graphic look as if it is old or make the drawing appear rougher than it is. Using this effect can create an interesting advertisement or piece of artwork to showcase your talents.

    Instructions

      • 1
Open the file for which you want to create the gritty effect in Illustrator.
      • 2
Click on the "Effect" menu and choose "Grain" from the menu.
      • 3
Drag the scaling slider to the left and right to change the degree of the grain effect on the picture. Placing the slider to the left lessens the effect, while the right side increases the effect.
      • 4
Drag the relief slider back and forth to alter the depth of the texture on the picture. The further right the slider is, the deeper the grain.
