3D modeling is way of re-creating objects we see, or could never see, inside a computer. The objects can be as realistic or fantastic as the user wants, and is only limited by his or her imagination. Autodesk Maya has a feature, called a timeline, that can breathe life into these 3D models by animating them. When done correctly, the 3D model timeline can be used to change a character's facial expression or create the realistic motion of a virtual vehicle.
Instructions
Things You'll Need
- Autodesk Maya
- 1Open the 3D modeling program Maya by double-clicking its icon on your desktop. A free trial of the program can be found at autodesk.com.
- 2Create your 3D model. If you're having trouble, start by pressing "Create" at the top of your screen, highlighting "Polygonal Primitives" and selecting "Sphere."
- 3Find the timeline, which is a gray bar marked with black numbers, located by default at the bottom of the screen. On the left side of the bar are two white boxes, use your mouse to click inside each box and type "1.00" inside. Then click inside the two white boxes on the right side of the timeline and type "20.00" inside both of those.
- 4Click "Window" at the top of the screen, select "Preferences," and a box will appear. Press "Timeline" on the list to the left of the box, then find the Playback heading on the right side of the box. Use the drop down menu next to Playback Speed to select "Real-time (24 fps)". Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the box, then close it.
- 5Select your 3D model, located in the center of your screen, then press your "S" key. This marks the model's place and will be used to show motion when the 3D model timeline is complete.
- 6Press "W" on your keyboard, which will make three colored arrows appear in the center of your model. Click and drag each arrow to move the model in a different direction. When the model is moved where you want it to be, select one of the black numbers in the timeline at the bottom of your screen and press the "S" key again.
- 7Repeat the above step until you are satisfied with your model's movement. Press the "Play" button in the bottom right corner of your screen to see the timeline of your 3D model come to life.
