How to Do a Shadow Pass in Maya

,
Autodesk Maya is a paid application that allows users to create and sculpt 3-D models. An important step when creating professional-looking 3-D models is to add realistic shadows. Most 3-D modeling tools call this effect "ambient occlusion," but in Autodesk Maya, it is called "shadow pass." You can add a shadow pass effect to a 3-D model in Autodesk Maya by adding a new layer to your project and editing its attributes.

Instructions

    • 1
Launch Maya and open the file containing the 3-D model you wish to edit.
    • 2
Select the objects and light sources that you wish to include in the shadow pass effect by clicking on them in the 3-D view.
    • 3
Click on the "New Render Layer" button in the Layers pane.
    • 4
Right-click on the newly created layer and select "Attributes."
    • 5
Expand the "Render Pass Options" section by clicking on the arrow next to the name of the section.
    • 6
Activate the "Shadow" check box and deselect all other check boxes.
    • 7
      Click "Apply."
