How to Join Two Layers Into One on GIMP

,
The graphics-editing software GIMP uses layers to create images. Working with layers allows you to alter specific sections of an image without affecting the rest of the image. A typical GIMP project might, for example, contain one layer for the foreground image, one layer for the image's textual elements and one for the background of the image. When you're satisfied with the way that the layers in a GIMP image look, consolidate them into one layer by joining them together.

Instructions

    • 1
Launch GIMP. Open the image containing the two layers that you want to join.
    • 2
Open the "Windows" menu and select "Dockable Dialogs." Click "Layers" to open a pop-up window that displays the layers contained in the image.
    • 3
Click on one of the layers that you want to join. Click and drag the entry for this layer up or down until it's directly above the layer to which you want to join it.
    • 4
Right-click the first layer. Select "Merge Down" from the menu that appears. GIMP joins the two layers into one.
