Rotating a Selection in GIMP

,
Generally, you will only find slight variations in the selection tools of most image-editing utilities. Tools like Freehand Select and Rectangular Select allow you to choose polygonal areas of your images, or select objects by tracing them. However, GIMP's rotation tool is one feature that helps the image editor stand out from others. If you want to exact the rotation of your selections by hand -- as opposed to rotating in increments -- you need to learn about GIMP's Rotate tool.

Instructions

    • 1
Launch GIMP using the program's desktop or Start menu shortcut. Select the "Open" option from GIMP's file heading. Locate the image you wish to work with using the file explorer window that appears.
    • 2
Choose one of the selection tools from GIMP's Toolbox window. Make your selection.
    • 3
Hold down your mouse's left button while tracing your selection's outline to make a selection with the Free Select Tool. If you selected the Rectangular or Ellipse selection tool, drag your cursor across the target object to make your selection.
    • 4
Click the "Rotate" tool in the Toolbox window and click on your selection. Drag the Rotate menu's Angle slider to the left or right to rotate your selection in the corresponding direction. Click the "Rotate" button to apply your changes to the selection.
    • 5
Select the "Save as" option from GIMP's File heading to save your work.
