OmniPage is a document conversion program for flatbed and handheld scanners.
The .104 file extension is used for files in the scanning application OmniPage. OmniPage is a Windows and Mac application that converts scanned documents into editable text-based files. A more obscure use of the .104 extension is found on the Golden Orchard collection of games, programs and utilities for Apple II computers. The two uses are completely unrelated.

OmniPage Data Files

  • Files ending with the .104 extension are data files that OmniPage accesses during the optical-character recognition process, also known as OCR. The program needs these data files to process scanned documents you want to change into editable files. Once the OCR process is complete, OmniPage saves additional data to the .104 extension files and closes them. You cannot open OmniPage .104 extension files directly. Deleting the files will cause the application to crash.

Corruption

  • If OmniPage, your computer or its operating system crashes while one or more .104 extension files are open, the files become corrupt and OmniPage is unable to open and process the files. The application may fail to open and may present one or more errors informing you of the data corruption. Files ending with the .104 extension can also become corrupt if you interrupt the OCR process by shutting down or restarting your computer, if a virus infects your system or if a problem develops with your computer’s hard drive or other storage device containing the files.

Reinstallation

  • Uninstall OmniPage if the application fails to open and presents one or more file corruption errors and then reinstall the application. If you no longer have the OmniPage CD-ROM, you will have to repurchase the application directly from Nuance or a retail outlet that sells OmniPage.

Golden Orchard CD-ROM

  • Golden Orchard, from DigiSoft, is a collection of applications for the the Apple II. It was first released in the 1990s. Although the Apple II was discontinued in 1993, DigiSoft still sells the product, with the most recent release dated 2008. Each application contains one or more .104 extension data files used during the operation of an application: opening, using and closing the application. You cannot open Golden Orchard CD-ROM .104 extension files directly nor can you delete the files. Deleting the files will cause the application the files are part of to crash and not launch. You can also open Golden Orchard applications on your Mac system by loading the ProDOS File System Extension from the CD-ROM’s Apple Software folder into your Mac’s Extensions folder.
