What Is an MRK File?

Some digital cameras use ".mrk" files.
An MRK file is a computer file that carries the ".mrk" file extension. Several different file types use this file extension, and so there is no single ".mrk" file type. Each of the implementations of this ".mrk" file follows a specific format and servers a different application. These files are incompatible and they are not interchangeable.

Markup Files

  • In draftsman's terminology a “markup” is a handwritten note on a drawing. This practice is common in architectural, engineering and technical drawing and the computerization of draftsmanship made these notes difficult to store. A number of applications allow markup, which is all known as “redlining,” to be stored in a separate file. The contents of the markup file can be overlaid and turned on or off, thus the drawing's original state can be modified by notes. Three different drawing packages use the ".mrk" file extension for markup files. These are Pro/Engineer by Parametric Technology; CAD packages produced by Concurrent Systems Inc. Ltd.; and Brava by Informative Graphics Corp.

TAPCIS

  • TAPCIS is an old program, written in 1983, which ran in the DOS operating environment of early PCs. It interacted with the CompuServe Information Service. The purpose of the system was to process messages arriving from CompuServe. Scanned messages generated a QSN file, which were produced by a program called QuickScan. TAPCIS generated a process script for each file to examine the header data in QSN files. These scripts were called “Marked Message Commands” and were stored in a file with the ".mrk" file extension.

Digital Cameras

  • Digital cameras use two different files with the ".mrk" file extension. The first is a Digital Print Order Format , or DPOF. This is a containing envelope for images stored on a camera's flash memory card. It stores information for printing the image. The Kodak Easyshare Camera uses the ".mrk" file extension for a “Job Definition” file. This file stores information about images that are transferred from a Kodak Easyshare camera to another device.

Other Formats

  • Windows 95 adds the ".mrk"file extension to a user benchmark file. Mission Risk, a multi-player computer strategy game also uses the ".mrk" file extension. SleepScan and Ceegraph are clinical scanners. They store information about an EEG scanning session in a text file with the ".mrk" file extension. The technician operating the scanner can also add comments to the file.
