How to Backup Your Tumblr Theme

Backing up your Tumblr theme ensures that if you make any changes you want reversed, or something happens to your blog, you can quickly reinstall the theme. Depending on your operating system, there are various ways to backup your theme. Tumblr has created a backup system for Macintosh users as of 2011. Windows users will have to use another third-party method to backup a Tumblr theme. Regardless of which operating system you own, always check your backups on a test site to ensure the backup is reliable and works.

1. Macintosh Backup

     Download the Tumblr backup app from the Tumblr staff blog website.

     Open the application by double-clicking on the "Tumblr Backup" icon. A dialog box will appear that asks for your "Tumblr email address" and "Tumblr password." Enter your credentials and press "Log In."

     Select the location for the backup in the "Save to" dialog box. The default option reverts to your "Documents" folder. Select the blog you want to backup as well, if you have more than one blog.

     Create incremental backups by running the backup program each day. The backup will only download new items that have changed. This backup program only backs up your theme; it will not backup posts by you or your users. This makes it easy to start your blog from scratch.
