An elaborately decorated cake can make a birthday or celebration extra special. Many people are nervous about making an error when drawing a picture directly onto a cake. Allow yourself room for mistakes by creating an image on a piece of parchment paper with gel, and then transferring it onto an already frosted cake. The transferring method is as simple as flipping over a piece of parchment.
Instructions
- 1Frost your cake with butter cream or another frosting of your choice. Spread the frosting in a smooth, relatively flat layer on the top of the cake where you plan to place your picture transfer. Use white or a light-colored frosting so that your design will be visible. Reserve leftover frosting to fill in the gel transfer.
- 2Tint the clear piping gel with food coloring. Figure out what colors you want to use for your design. Portion the gel and tint it accordingly. Transfer the tinted gels into small disposable piping bags. If you want to fill in your gel outline with frosting, tint the reserved frosting in the color or colors of your choice.
- 3Draw an outline of your design on a piece of paper with a black marker. If the design isn't symmetrical, draw it so it is "flopped," meaning reversed left to right on the paper. Place a piece of parchment paper over the design. Carefully pipe the gel onto the parchment paper, tracing the lines of your design and switching colors as necessary. When finished, allow the gel to dry slightly for a few minutes.
- 4Lift the parchment paper carefully and flip it onto the cake, gel side down. Lightly press the gel down with your fingers so it transfers onto the cake. Slowly peel the parchment off of the cake, leaving the gel design behind. Leave the design as is or fill another piping bag with the tinted frosting and fill in the gel outline.
