How to Open .Bac File

BAC is a file format that was used by an application called Avantrix Backup Plus to store backed-up data. This application is no longer supported by operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7, so you cannot use it to open BAC files. Fortunately, you can change the file extension on a BAC file from .bac to .zip and then use a file decompression tool to view its contents.

     Click “Start,” type “Show or Hide File Extensions” (without quotes) and press “Enter.”

     Uncheck the “Hide Extensions” option and click “Apply.”

     Right-click the BAC file and select “Rename.”

     Change the .bac portion at the end of the file name to .zip and press “Enter.”

     Download and install a file decompression utility such as WinRAR, WinZip or PowerZip.

     Right-click the BAC file and select “Open With.” Select a file decompression utility from the list of programs and click “OK” to view the contents inside the BAC file.
