The extension ".pmf" is used by more than one program. A file with a .pmf extension is most likely either a Pegasus mail file or an Esri published map file. A Pegasus mail file is an email attachment format used by Pegasus Mail, an email client; you need Pegasus Mail to read the file. Esri published map files are read-only map files created with a utility called ArcMap. You can read these with ArcView, a free downloadable file viewer.

Pegasus Mail Files
- 1Navigate to the Pegasus Mail Web page and click on the "downloads" tab. Follow the link to the download for your region. Select the appropriate download for your operating system and save the files on your computer.
- 2Open the executable setup file by double-clicking it. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Pegasus Mail.
- 3Launch Pegasus Mail and use it to open the .pmf file.
Esri Published Map File
- 1Open the Esri website and navigate to the ArcReader software download page. Select the correct download for your operating system. Create an Esri account and log in. Download and save the files to your computer.
- 2Unzip the compressed files. Double-click the executable setup file. Follow the instructions on the screen to install ArcReader on your computer.
- 3Launch ArcReader and use it to view the .pmf file.
